RACE INFO

LOCATION:  The Wakarusa Off-Road Challenge will take place on the Levee and River Trails in Lawrence, Kansas. These trails are legendary for being smooth and fast with just the right amount of hairpin turns to make this serious off-road fun. Racers will also be paddling on the Kansas River at just the time your legs will need a rest. Race Headquarters (Start / Finish) will be located near the 8th Street Trailhead and Boat Ramp.

DATES & TIMES:  The Wakarusa Off-Road Challenge will start at 9:00AM on Saturday, September 6th. Racer check-in will be held on race day morning (Septemeber 6th) from 7:15AM - 8:30AM at Race Headquarters at the 8th Street Boat Ramp and Trailhead. It is required that all racers check-in before the race. Team members are not required to check-in together, but each team member must check-in and turn in a completed waiver before competing in the Wakarusa Challenge.

DIVISIONS:  The race is open to solo racers (male & female) and 2-person teams (co-ed, male, female). We will allow a maximum of 225 racers. Solo racers are REQUIRED to bring their own kayak or canoe, PFD, and paddle to the race. 2-Person teams have the OPTION of bringing their own canoe, PFDs, and paddles to the race or paying an extra $20 dollars per racer to use a canoe, paddle & PFD provided by race management. 2-PERSON TEAMS ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO USE CANOES DURING THE RACE. 2-Person teams are not allowed to use any other type of boat during the race (like a tandem kayak, etc.). 2-Person teams will start and finish the race together and are required to stay within 50 feet of each other at all times during the race.

RACE FEES:

$55 until 10:59PM CT on May 30
$65 until 10:59PM CT on August 1
$75 until 10:59PM CT on September 1

* Registration will close at 10:59PM CT on September 1st.
* Registrations after August 22nd are not guaranteed a race shirt (or the correct size of shirt).

Prizes for Top 3 Overall Solo Winners (male & female divisions):
1st Place:  $100*
                  FREE entry into any future Wakarusa Challenge**
2nd Place:  $50*
                  50% off entry into any future Wakarusa Challenge**
3rd Place:  $25*
                  25% off entry into any future Wakarusa Challenge**
* A minimum of 20 racers in the Solo Male division are required in order to receive cash prizes in the Solo Male division. A minimum of 20 racers in the Solo Female division are required in order to receive cash prizes in the Solo Female division.

** The free and discounted entry certificates can be applied towards any future Wakarusa Challenge and do not expire.
Prizes will be awarded 3 deep (1st, 2nd, & 3rd place soloists will have a choice of prizes) based on the number of teams participating in each division on the day of the race. RACERS MUST BE PRESENT at the awards ceremony to receive prizes.

The following formula is applied:
2 - 3 racers participating in division --- 1st place awarded
4 - 5 racers participating in division --- 1st & 2nd places awarded
6 + racers participating in division --- 1st , 2nd, & 3rd places awarded

* There must be a minimum of 15 teams in your division in order for a cash prize to be awarded. If there are not 15 teams in your division, no cash prize will be awarded for that division, and you will receive your choice of prizes from our sponsors instead of cash.

** The free and discounted entry certificates will be awarded to each individual racer on the team (not the team as a whole) and can be applied towards any future Wakarusa Challenge. The discounted entry certificates do not have an expiration date.

AWARDS CEREMONY:  There will be an awards ceremony at 12:30(ish) PM at Race HQ. Food and refreshments will be provided for all racers after the race. Racers eligible for prizes must be present at the Awards Ceremony in order to receive them.

REFUNDS AND SUBSTITUTIONS:  No refunds will be given to teams or racers that can not make the race. You will be allowed to transfer your entry to other racers in the event that you can no longer make the event. If you are transferring your entry to another team or racer, you must notify the race staff of this change and provide all of the information about the new racer(s) to the race staff at a minimum of 48 hours before the start of the race.

RAIN / WEATHER RESCHEDULE:  In the event that the weather is too treacherous to host the race, for whatever reason, the race will be rescheduled to September 13th. There will be no refunds (or discounts on next year's event) if you are unable to make the reschedule date.

SPECTATORS:  Spectators, friends and family are more than welcome to come to the race and watch the race from the Race Headquarters area. The course itself is off-limits to all non-racers, and only race staff and volunteers will be allowed on the course during the race. However, spectators will get to see racers multiple times at the Race Headquarters area during the race. If you would like to be more involved in the Wakarusa Challenge, please consider volunteering.

SUPPORT CREW:  The Wakarusa Challenge will be an unsupported race and no support person(s) will be allowed in the Transition Area or on the course.

VOLUNTEERS:  The Wakarusa Challenge is looking for some good volunteers! All volunteers will get the satisfaction of helping out with an exciting event as well as receive a free race shirt, post-race food and a 50% off any Wakarusa Challenge discount certificate (that can be used by anyone)! If you have friends and family that plan on coming to the race, have them volunteer and be a part of the action! It's a great way for them to get involved in the race!
